The Lawrence Public Library first opened in 1904 in the Carnegie Building at the northwest corner of 9th and Vermont Streets. The Library moved to its current building in 1972, a structure which holds 45,000 square feet. It was the city’s largest municipal building to date when it opened.

The new facility offered “modern” services such as rental typewriters, copy-making machines, and a photographic checkout system which was touted as “eliminating handwritten circulation records”!
