Beth Farrell, globe-trotting unpublished novelist who kabobs her Brussels sprouts
How do you save money?
“I just moved here from Queens, New York. I was working at a job I didn’t like and needed a few months to do some writing, so it wasn’t hard to save money at all. I was highly motivated. For years, I was like, ‘I want to live in a place like Lawrence—wait, why the hell don’t I just move to Lawrence?’ Here I am, and it’s been f*cking great. In particular, to save up for the move, I cooked a lot and drank at home. Drinking at home is key. While I’m here, I’m biking a lot. Everything is so close, you can bike it. People will sometimes drive a few blocks here, which is ridiculous. I’ll try it for the winter, but we’ll see how that works out. I might puss out in January and buy a car.”
What do you splurge on?
“Going out on a great night like this. I like really good wine—Sauvignon Blancs and Syrahs, specifically. I think everyone is allowed one thing that they spend some money on.”
